Who We Are and What We Do

Celebrating over 20 years of great Gorge windsurfing!

The Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association is a membership-based nonprofit organization in Hood River, Oregon, dedicated to enhancing the windsurfing experience in the Columbia River Gorge. Since 1987, our members and local community partners have helped us achieve the following:

  • Build Rowena State Park
  • Reopen Viento State Park and install bathrooms and a hospitable path to the water
  • Work with Washington State Parks to acquire and develop Doug’s Beach
  • Provide picnic tables and trees at the Event Site
  • Build rigging areas and ramps at the Hook
  • Create a youth camp with Hood River Parks and Recreation
  • Host several events, remove debris and trash from beaches, install several toilets throughout the Gorge, and so much more!

2007 Statistics

2007 was an amazing year at CGWA! Here is some of what our members helped us accomplish:

  • Create a new windsurf launch at the Luhr Jensen parking lot in Hood River
  • Work with the Port of Hood River and the Columbia Gorge Kiteboarding Association to help different water users recreate together and safely after the growth of the Hood River Delta
  • Host Betties 360 windsurfing- Introduced 30 young women to the sport of windsurfing
  • Continue our youth program and evening drop in sessions all summer long!

Vision

Our vision is for an integrated, fully engaged windsurfing community with abundant access to sites and services in support of windsurfing in the Columbia River Gorge.

Values

CGWA’s programs and projects are guided by the following principles.  These are our beliefs, and they show what we care about most:

  • Fun!
  • Safe windsurfing sites and safety conscious windsurfers
  • A broad range of opportunities for anyone interested in windsurfing
  • Youth involvement in windsurfing
  • Responsible stewardship of the resources supporting windsurfing, which include beaches, funds, and people
  • Integrity and transparency within the CGWA membership and Board
  • Support from our membership and community

Members

CGWA has members in Oregon, Washington, and as far away as Europe.  Help grow our membership- tell your friends why you like windsurfing in the Gorge, and send them to our Get Involved page.

Anybody can become a member of CGWA.  By becoming a member, you will:

  • Improve local windsurfing launches
  • Make windsurfing fun with family and high-wind events
